All You Need to Know About PDC Hole Openers
Hole openers are a device used to enlarge the borehole during a well drilling operation. It can be positioned either above the drill bit or above a pilot run inside the existing borehole.
Numerous designs exist, in sizes varying from 8 inches to above 66 inches. Usages range from Vertical Drilling to Horizontal Directional Drilling(HDD)
This article provides a guide to hole openers. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each type, applications, and factors to consider when purchasing, as well as the different types of hole openers(rock reamers) on the market. Finally, this guide will help you compare PDC Hole Openers with other types of hole openers.
What Are PDC Hole Opener Used For?
Also known as rock reamers, hole openers are used to enlarge the existing hole by cutting into the rock. Applications of hole openers include:
- Trenchless construction of horizontal directional pipes
- Vertical directional water well reaming
- Vertical directional geothermal wells
- Mining reaming projects
How Do Hole Openers Work?
The working principle of hole openers is that when the hole opener rotates, the PDC cutter also relies on pressure to rotate, so the PDC cutter can form a concentric network crushing trajectory when breaking the rock at the working face, during which the rock is squeezed into thin layers of fragments to fall off.
Why Choose PDC Hole Openers?
Point One
PDC hole openers are ideal for jobs where trenching is not possible, such as pipe installation.
Point Two
PDC Hole Opener can be customized to any size to meet engineering requirements.
Point Three
For vertical directional drilling, the cost of a hole opener is 2-3 times lower than a larger size tricone bit.
Point Four
Good effect of shoring and slag removal, reduce the repeated rock breaking of PDC cutter and improve the reaming speed
Point Five
PDC hole opener is mainly used for reaming hard rock sections, and its effect is better than barrel reamer.
Point Six
For vertical directional drilling, the cost of a hole opener is 2-3 times lower than a larger size tricone bit.
Considerations When Buying PDC Hole Opener
#1. Diameter of Hole Opener--Necessary
The Diameter of Hole Opener is the first factor to be considered by the customer. Tell your supplier the size of the hole to be reamed each time to design the most suitable hole opener for the project and save money.
If you are unsure of what size to purchase, consult your supplier. We will be able to provide you with specific recommendations based on the specifications of your project.
Reamers are available in sizes from 8″ – 36″, or larger. We specialize in customizing them for you.
#2. Blades, Rows of PDC cutters--Necessary
The choice of PDC reamer needs to consider the number of blades, rows of PDC cutters, which is determined by the hardness of the strata. The more the number of blades, the better the stability and increase the cutting force.
#3. Rock Type(Formation) & Cutter Size--Necessary
When selecting a hole opener, you can provide the supplier with a description of the formation, e.g. soft to medium formations with medium soft, low compressive strength and interbedded. Rock type, e.g. mudstone, chert, hard gypsum, shale, etc. Or tell us what is the compressive strength in MPa. Based on the information you provide, we will professionally provide you with the most cost effective reamer that suits your needs. The recommended solutions for the hardness of the formation are as follows: chisel tooth , 1916, is recommended for medium hard and soft formations; tapered tooth, 1616, is recommended for harder formations. ball tooth, 1308, is recommended for hard formations. the correct PDC cuutter shape will increase drilling speed and save costs.
#4. Thread connection--Necessary
If you choose a custom hole opener, you will be required to provide the type of thread to better match the drill rig and the drill pipe, e.g. if you are using a Ditch Witch drill rig, you will need to choose a thread starting with JT. We also provide API standard snap type, for example: 4 1/2 API REG.
#5. Horizontal Directional or Vertical drilling--Necessary
Most important, please let your supplier know the type of well you want to drill: Trenchless(Horizontal Directional Drilling) or Vertical Directional. We will provide you with a professional customized service.
#6. Water Hole or Nozzles--We can make recommendations
#7. Type: Whole body type& Welding type or Replaceable blades
The layout of the number of roller cone is related to the hardness of the formation and the desired for drilling speed. The harder the formation, the closer the number of palms, the slower the drilling speed and the poorer the chip evacuation capacity. When the formation is medium-hard or soft, the number of roller cone can be slightly sparse, which can increase the drilling speed and improve the chip removal capacity.
#8. Length of Shaft--We can make recommendations
The diameter of the center rod is related to the layout of the roller cutters, and the length of the center rod of the hole opener is related to the torque force that the reamer can withstand. The greater the length, the greater the torque. To prevent the center rod from breaking due to excessive torque. Please consult your supplier and we will provide you with professional advice on the length.
